Jilted

Tears glistened, on wet cheeks,
Falling soundlessly onto a sodden pillow;
Body wracked with sobs,
Grace’s heart was breaking.

Anger and despair filled her soul
as she relived the cruel way
he jilted her;
casting her off
like a speck of unwanted dirt.

The pathetic tale he spun,
a cunning ruse,
to get his desire –
illicit intimacy with another.

The sight of the two of them together,
too painful to behold.

Recalling the jocular laughter
in his piercing blue eyes
bile rose in her throat;
nausea threatened to overwhelm her.

How could she face the world?
Death felt like a welcome escape.

Unobserved within her,
a new flickering presence
began its tenacious hold on life.

Words used - behold break jilt jocular ruse rose tale tenacious grace glisten
