Journey To A New Life

On the seventeenth of March,
out of Dublin we sailed;
away from destitution
wrought by potato crops that failed.

Set to make our fortunes
in New York all paved with gold;
we were herded into steerage,
packed with Irish young and old.

Days were long and boring,
trapped in an airless stinking place;
with a diet of boiled cabbage
and people fighting over space.

But worse was yet to come,
as sickness spread around;
so many people dying daily,
we longed for solid ground.

Land was finally sighted;
Ellis Island, journey’s end.
On luck to pass the medical
for acceptance we depend.

words used: seventeenth, march, Dublin, gold, Irish, cabbage, luck
